Why I Switched to a Tallow-Based Face Cleanser—and Never Went Back
I’ll be honest—if you had told me a few years ago that I’d be using a tallow-based face cleanser, I probably would’ve laughed.
Like most guys, I used whatever face wash was on the shelf. Something that foamed up, smelled “clean,” and left my skin feeling tight afterward. I thought that tight, dry feeling meant it was working. The problem was, every time I used one of those cleansers, my skin felt stripped. Dry. Almost uncomfortable.
So I did what most people do—I bought a face lotion to fix what the cleanser just did. Clean, then immediately rehydrate. Strip, then repair. Over and over.
I never questioned that cycle… until I tried a tallow-based face cleanser.
The Old Cycle: Clean, Strip, Repair
Most conventional face washes are designed to remove oil aggressively. They use surfactants, foaming agents, and detergents that break down and wash away the skin’s natural oils.
That’s fine if you’re cleaning dishes. But your skin actually needs oil to function properly.
The result for me was always the same:
-
Clean face
-
Tight, dry skin
-
Immediate need for lotion
-
Long ingredient lists doing damage control
I didn’t realize how backwards that process was until I experienced something different.
The First Time I Used a Tallow-Based Face Cleanser
When I first tried the Fancy Fat Tallow-Based Face Cleanser, I didn’t expect much. I figured it would either feel greasy or not really clean my skin.
Instead, here’s what happened.
I got in the shower, put a small amount on my face, and gently massaged it in. No heavy foam. No strong scent. Just a smooth, conditioning feel.
Then I took a warm washcloth and lightly wiped it off under the water.
That’s it.
When I got out of the shower and dried my face, I instinctively reached for lotion—then stopped. My skin already felt hydrated. Calm. Balanced.
No tightness. No dryness. No need to “fix” anything.
That was the moment it clicked.
Why This Works So Differently Than Regular Face Washes
The biggest difference is that this cleanser doesn’t fight your skin—it works with it.
Most face cleansers are water-based and detergent-driven. They remove oil first, then rely on you to put something back afterward.
A tallow-based cleanser works differently because tallow closely resembles your skin’s natural oils. Instead of stripping the skin barrier, it helps preserve it.
When you cleanse with tallow:
-
Dirt and buildup are lifted gently
-
The skin’s lipid barrier is respected
-
Moisture is retained instead of removed
You’re not erasing your skin’s defenses and then rebuilding them with chemicals. You’re maintaining what your skin already knows how to do.
No More “Clean Then Repair” Routine
The biggest surprise for me was how simple my routine became.
Now, my process is:
-
Cleanse in the shower
-
Rinse with a warm washcloth
-
Dry my face
-
Done
No toner. No serum. No lotion.
I’ve been using this cleanser for over a year now, and I can honestly say I won’t go back to anything else. Not because it’s trendy or different—but because it actually works.
My skin feels better throughout the day, especially after showering. It’s not fighting dryness or overproducing oil to compensate. It just feels normal.
Why Stripping Moisture Isn’t “Clean”
We’ve been conditioned to think that clean skin should feel squeaky, tight, or dry. But that sensation is often a sign that the skin barrier has been disrupted.
When you constantly strip your skin:
-
It loses its protective oils
-
It becomes more reactive
-
It depends on added products to feel normal again
Tallow-based cleansing flips that approach. It cleans without declaring war on your skin.
A More Honest Way to Care for Your Skin
I didn’t switch to a tallow-based face cleanser because I wanted a “natural” label or a complicated skincare philosophy. I switched because I was tired of the cycle—clean, dry out, fix, repeat.
This cleanser let me stop fixing problems that didn’t need to exist in the first place.
If you’ve ever felt like your face wash does its job too well—and then leaves you reaching for another product just to feel comfortable again—this might be worth reconsidering.
For me, it’s been a complete reset. And once you experience a cleanser that leaves your skin feeling clean and hydrated, it’s hard to unlearn how unnecessary the old way really was.
